ARTIST STATEMENT

Dorasan Station is a latent site that sharply presents the divided reality of the Korean peninsular and at the same time, embraces the potential of the connected future. Completed in 2002, the site has become South Korea’s military frontline and a starting point from which to expand into the world.

Yiyun Kang’s work Solace, created as part of the 2021 DMZ Art & Peace Platform project, will be screened from the Dorasan Station’s large-scale media wall. From the initial visit for the preliminary research, the artist realised that the station is strangely quiet as if hibernating although it used to be full of various human activities. Despite the awkward silence, Kang found Dorasan station as still a highly socio-political site, where the opposing ideologies of the South and the North conflict and clash.

Through Solace, Kang aims to invigorate the suffocating and static atmosphere of the space. The work fuses videos of human forms and digital contents, resulting in the dynamic coexistence of heterogeneous components. Human figures are illustrated in an abstract way, making it meaningless to distinguish gender, nationality, and race. This is to portray the station not as a site of ideological confrontation between South and North Korea, but as a passage in which many people’s life has taken place. Ultimately this piece attempts to relieve the tensions that envelope the place and instead breathe new vitality into it so it can become a ‘solace’ to all those who pass through.

도라산역은 남북 분단의 단면을 보여주는 동시에 경의선이 연결되는 희망을 안고 있는, 잠재태의 공간이다. 대한민국의 최전방이자 세계로 뻗어 나갈 수 있는 시작점이 될 수도 있는 이 공간은 2002년 완공되었다. 강이연의 〈위무〉는 《2021 DMZ Art & Peace Platform》 프로젝트의 일환으로 도라산역에 설치되는 미디어월에 들어가는 작업이다. 작가가 작업을 위한 사전 답사를 위해 방문했던 도라산역은 한때는 다양한 인간의 활동들이 이루어졌을 테지만, DMZ 안에 위치한 채 잠들어 있는, 묘한 정적이 흐르는 공간이었다. 그 고요함에도 불구하고, 작가는 도라산 역에서 남과 북의 이념이 대립하는, 첨예한 사회 정치적 역학의 긴장감을 느꼈다.

강이연은 〈위무〉를 통해 다소 전형적이고 정적인 도라산역사 공간에 활기를 띄운다. 미디어월 안에 담길 영상물에는 실제 인간의 모습을 촬영한 영상들과 역동적인 디지털 영상들이 혼합된다. 인체의 모습은 추상적으로 표현되어 성별, 국적, 인종의 구분이 무의미하고, 디지털과 혼종되어 이질적인 요소들이 공존한다. 작가는 이를 통해 남과 북의 이념 대립의 장으로서가 아닌, 이 역을 오갔던 사람들의 모습을 담고자 하였다. 이질적인 요소들을 포용하며 춤추듯이 전개되는 영상이 분단의 현재를 담고 있는 도라산역의 긴장감을 완화시키며, 새로운 생명력을 불어넣어 이곳을 지나가는 모든 이에게 ‘위무’가 되기를 바란다.
