Artist statement on BEYOND THE SCENE

2020

Beyond the Scene (2020) is Yiyun Kang’s immersive projection mapping installation exhibited in the global project, CONNECT, BTS. This work demonstrates how BTS’ message extends its influence on a global scale with ARMY, the ‘one of a kind’ fandom. Kang identified this phenomenon even more meaningful under this particular time where the current scenes, such as political, financial, environmental and social scenes seem to reach the breaking point. Kang’s work illustrates how BTS and ARMY pushed the boundaries together to move beyond the existing scenes, and questions what this phenomenon means to us in the present time. 

Kang created an immersive audio-visual environment wrapped by large-scale projections that capture the human movements, inspired by BTS’ choreography. These abstract, yet dynamic and intense movements fill the space, just like how the seven boys built BTS together with the support of ARMY. These imageries are then mixed with digital animations, opening up an imaginative dimension as they expand beyond the external facade. The resulting environment is bereft of boundaries. Viewers can navigate between the analog and digital, the physical and virtual and the material and immaterial as well as between surface and depth. This multi-sensorial space challenges viewers’ perception and emancipates their dichotomous thinking by immersing corporeality. 

This work primarily illustrates BTS as a cultural figure that incessantly pushing the boundaries. Furthermore, Kang examines what made BTS's current presence possible to find social implications that extend beyond the pop-culture scene. In Beyond the Scene, the audience, work and space are connected and entangled together therefore it cannot be fully appreciated without acknowledging this relationship. Through this work, Kang aims to demonstrate that we need to work together to go beyond the current scenes to be connected again, to make the world inclusive and sustainable.

Beyond the Scene(2020)은 글로벌 프로젝트인 CONNECT, BTS에 유일한 한국 작가로 참여한 강이연 작가의 몰입적인 프로젝션 맵핑 설치작업이다. 작가는 방탄소년단의 메세지가 아미(ARMY)와 연결되어, 전세계로 영향력을 뻗어나가는 모습에서 영감을 얻어, 이 현상이 대중문화를 너머 우리에게 주는 의미가 무엇인지 탐색한다. 현재 사회, 정치, 환경, 모든 면에서 위기에 처해있는 인류에게 이 전례없는 현상이 주는 울림이 있다고 생각하여, 제목을 Beyond the Scene으로 지었다.

작가는 대형 프로젝션으로 공간을 완전히 감싸 몰입감 넘치는 시청각 환경을 만든다. 방탄소년단의 안무에 영감을 받은 추상적인 움직임들이 공간을 가득 채우는데, 이는 일곱 명의 소년들이 아미들과 함께 성장해 간 것처럼 역동적이고 강렬한 움직임을 전달한다. 이 영상들은 디지털 애니메이션과 뒤섞여 마치 공간이 표면을 넘어 새로운 차원으로 끊임없이 확장하는 듯한 상상적 차원을 연다. 이 공감각적인 환경 안에서 아날로그와 디지털, 실재와 가상, 물질과 비물질, 표면과 깊이의 이분법은 비고정적으로 끊임없이 변화한다. 이는 관객의 인식에 도전해 이분법적 사고를 해방시킨다. 이렇게 이 작업은 일차적으로는 진정성 있는 모습으로 변화를 모색하며 끊임없이 한계를 뛰어넘는 그룹의 모습을 표현한다.

나아가 작가는 무엇이 방탄소년단의 현재 모습을 가능하게 했는지 보다 깊이 있게 질문하며 여기에서 대중문화적 현상을 넘어서는 사회적 시사점을 찾는다. Beyond the Scene에서는 관객과 작품, 공간이 서로 연결되고 얽혀 있는데, 이 관계를 벗어나서는 작품을 충분히 감상할 수 없다. 방탄소년단과 아미들이 어떻게 기존의 경계들을 넘어 왔는지 표현함과 동시에, 보다 광의적으로 작가는 이 작업을 통해 우리가 현재의 위기를 넘어서 다시 연결되고, 포괄적이고 지속 가능한 세계를 만들기 위해 함께 노력해야 한다는 것을 이야기한다.
